Our Story

A unique blend of simplicity and luxury awaits at 33 Lake Terrace, a private villa in Hikkaduwa, where the mesmerizing symphony of architecture, combined with exceptional hospitality, authentic local experiences, and fusions of Sri Lankan culinary delights will leave our guests with lasting memories and wanting to return.

Arriving at the villa, first impressions are filled with its cool, white walls and minimalist lines, a celebration of elegant modernism. But as you step closer it reveals lovingly crafted features that reflect thoughtful sustainable architectural design. Inside, the impression is of light and space, warm rays of sun throwing stripes up the walls. The setting serves as an ideal canvas to display a treasure trove of hand-crafted furniture, sculptures and fabrics that embody thousands of years of rural heritage – a heritage facing extinction.

In an effort to keep Sri Lanka’s slowly dying art forms alive, 33 Lake Terrace commissioned all of its interior decoration from the current generation of artisans who are striving to preserve them. Each of its bedrooms has a theme based on an endangered ancient island custom or tradition, which is reflected in the furniture and vibrant art that adorn the walls.

Location

A Discrete Haven of Peace

Hikkaduwa, nestled along the beautiful southern coast of Sri Lanka, is a dream destination for tourists seeking sun-kissed beaches and cultural charm. With its pristine golden sands and crystal-clear waters, Hikkaduwa offers a breathtaking coastal experience. Located just 900 meters from Hikkaduwa Beach and a leisurely 15-minute stroll from the bright bustle of Hikkaduwa town, 33 Lake Terrace provides guests with both the vibrancy of the beach, as well as the serenity and the tranquility of the lake.

Bordered by thick jungle ringing with the cries of peacocks and overlooks the gentle green sparkle of Hikkaduwa Lake, this unique boutique property has been designed entirely with privacy and sanctuary in mind.

Designed so that all of its seven spacious rooms have a view of the lake, by day guests are played scenes of fishermen gliding back and forth in their turquoise and yellow catamarans, nudged by the breeze, kingfishers darting around them like arrows. By night, new players emerge from the wings – the prawn-trappers lighting their kerosene lanterns along the bamboo traps, like a belt of fireflies across the water; and the crab-catchers’ creeping through the tangled branches of the mangroves, their torches flickering as they probe the mud for tomorrow’s earnings. These are scenes that have re-played for millennia – scenes of ancient traditions, self-sufficiency and living in harmony with nature.

The Design & The Designer

Immersive Narratives of Lifestyles, Cultures, and Crafts

Designed by Sri Lankan architect Suzette Whehella, 33 Lake Terrace is a bespoke work of architecture that goes beyond luxurious and tranquil accommodations to provide guests with an immersive experience in southern Sri Lanka’s lifestyles, cultures, and crafts.

In an age where modernity often overshadows the past, this unique property stands as a sanctuary for traditions at risk of fading away. Within the embrace of its walls, the property boasts not just rooms – but seven distinct narratives, each serving as a vignette, a portal into a different facet of ancient island custom or tradition. The meticulously curated collection of architectural elements, fabrics, and artefacts serves as a bridge between eras, inviting guests to embark on a journey through the ages, exploring the essence of what makes Sri Lanka’s heritage so profound and unique.

33 Lake Terrace stands as a holistic revitalization effort aimed at supporting struggling local communities, thereby fostering a positive social impact and establishing an improved, sustainable chain of social welfare. Moreover, the commitment to environment sustainability extends to zero plastic and zero waste policies, as well as a significant portion of the property’s energy needs being met by renewable sources to ensure a low carbon footprint.
