Ja-Kotuwa

Hop into one of the lake’s brightly colored catamarans with a local fisherman to learn the traditional method of catching lagoon tiger prawns and crabs in bamboo traps called “Ja Kotuwa”. Made of bamboo poles lashed together with coconut rope then strung across the lake like a fence, it’s how our ancestors fished the lakes before speed boats were introduced to Sri Lanka. Try your hand at coaxing prawns from its central chamber – the trap – and then dine on your catch.
